1986 – Sept 27-28
Location: Spaceland – League City, TX
Plane – Otter for competition and Beech for fun jumps
100 people registered – 8 teams – Jumpers could jump on more than one team, some jumped on three. It was a manifesting nightmare, but I was juggling that part and just gave the tickets to manifest when we were ready. We registered everyone out of the back of the pickup truck.
This was actually an effort by Laird and me to gather friends to jump together and just get the local Houston jumpers out to the DZ early and stimulate everyone to make a few extra jumps during the downturn in the economy. The advertising was mostly word of mouth but there was more interest than expected. Soon we received calls from interested jumpers in Dallas and Austin and mailed out some info to a few Texas drop zones. We initially expected a couple of teams of local jumpers but we had teams from Austin, Dallas and competitors from Oklahoma and Louisiana.
The dives were stamped on the front of the flyer advertising the meet if anyone was paying attention. The meet was two rounds, both consisting of a Texas Star – round – Texas Star.
One videographer filmed all the dives – Curt Jarvis.
Since jumpers were allowed to jump on more than one team, several fun teams were formed such as the all women’s team and the all AFF graduates team. (AFF was still relatively new so it was fun to see students progress to this level so fast.) The ladies built the first all ladies Texas Star (so we created the first pink patches) and the AFF team finished high in the standings.
Every team completed at least the first point.
Winning Team: I’m not in, I’m thru.
Captains: Terry Pike and Ron Mills
