What the heck is TeXXas 20-Way? Only one of the longer-term big-way skydiving competitions around! We hope you enjoy the history of this event, which started at Spaceland Parachute Center (League City) back in 1986. The historical information and photos provided here for 1986-2001 are by the grace of co-founder Madolyn Murdock, who (thankfully) keeps better records than most of our accountants! The competition took a break from 2002 to 2011, then was reactivated by Chuck Akers for 2012 to 2019. COVID canceled the event in 2020, and Akers turned the meet over to Skydive Spaceland starting in 2021. The competition continues today at two of Skydive Spaceland’s three Texas locations (Houston and Dallas).
Murdock and Laird Cogburn’s first TeXXas 20-way competition drew eight teams and was held out of a Twin Otter, with a Beech for fun jumps. Joe Svec originated the TEXXAS award and patch. The popular event is a deeply rooted part of big-way belly skydiving in Texas, and has drawn teams from other parts of the country and the world over the years (lookin’ at you, Latin Mafia!).
This is an ongoing historical project, so if you have any photos or information you’d like to submit for this site, please contact Christy West at Skydive Spaceland. Many, many thanks to those who have provided information and helped tag people! If you see someone who needs to be tagged in a photo, please comment on the post to let us know! 🙂 Enjoy browsing; there are a lot of photos, and you’ll see lots of friends, including a few members of Arizona Airspeed and other world-class skydiving teams/competitors.
